In this feature we talk to Dr. Nanci Guest, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, who is chairing the Exercise Professionals Workshop “Plant-Based and Thriving: Why Many Athletes are Going Green ” at CSEP 2020.

What can CSEP certified members learn from attending the session you’re chairing that they can apply to their practice?

  • Learn how Plant-Based diets can adequately support both endurance, and power/strength sports in addition to optimizing body composition goals.
  • Learn that animal protein is not essential to muscle growth nor recovery.
  • Learn the current science surrounding the need for specific supplements in some athletes beyond the well-known micronutrients (i.e. iron, vitamin B12), such as creatine, carnitine and choline to optimize performance.

What do you think makes this topic and the content unique to the CSEP conference?

This topic is unique because we are seeing, for the first time a diet that is not just a fad but one that is embraced by many athletes for reasons beyond physical health. Athletes are passionate spokes people and issues such as climate, the environment and animal welfare are becoming important to them. Dietary approaches can be part of a justice movement.

CSEP 2020 will be 100% online this year; how do you think this will affect your session?

I don’t think it will affect my session much. I do like to gauge the audience reaction when I am speaking live but I’m confident my content will be of interest!
