POSITION SUMMARY
The research assistant (RA) will support the principal investigator (PI) (Dr Kristin Campbell) and other research staff and trainees in the Cancer Exercise & Physiotherapy Lab (CEPL) on exercise oncology research projects. The RA will coordinate research studies primarily focused on exercise interventions for people with cancer, including delivering exercise interventions (individual or group, online or in person) for people with early stage and advanced cancer. The RA will be teaching exercise programs (group & individual) in both virtual and in-person settings. This position will include recruiting subjects, overseeing progress of projects, as well as collecting and managing data. The position also includes oversight of daily operations of the exercise gym space, well as supervision, scheduling and training of staff. This position is part-time at 0.8 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE), which translates to 30 hours per week.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
Reports directly to the study Principal Investigator (K. Campbell). Works closely with research staff and trainees in the CEPL.
WORKING RELATIONSHIP:
The position will work directly with the investigators who are mounting the studies. Responsibilities include working independently with minimum supervision in a setting that involves varied and complex tasks such data collection, research study coordination, and collaboration with stakeholders and health care professionals.
WORK PERFORMED
- Screens participants for eligibility to participate in the research study
- Collects and manages study outcome data
- Conducts physical function and fitness assessment (in person and online)
- Delivers individual or group-based exercise programs (in person and online)
- Maintains the emergency action plan for the facility
- Oversees daily operations of the fitness facility
- Tracks of finances related to fitness facility and budget forecasting
- Monitors and tracks project progress to ensure timely completion of projects.
- Coordinates meetings with study team, stakeholders and/or health care professionals, fostering excellent communication skills in a collaborative environment.
- Develops and disseminates study materials.
- Writes reports and provides weekly updates on project status.
- Drafts and monitors research ethics applications.
- Carries out all other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR/IMPACT OF DECISION-MAKING
Inappropriate judgement would compromise the quality of the research study, related data acquisition and the reporting of research outcomes.
Inappropriate judgement would also compromise research success, participant safety and ethical approval, thus affect the credibility of the Investigators.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Employee will work with minimum supervision, receiving instruction only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedures. The position requires a strong independent work ethic and a candidate capable of setting their priorities within a given framework, and working within agreed-upon milestones and timelines.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May have supervisory responsibilities for a small group of employees at lower classifications and may have input into staff selection and performance evaluation.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Human subject research laboratory environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
- Minimum of an undergraduate degree in related field with a minimum of 4 years of related experience in exercise supervision with a clinical population. Experience working with cancer survivors preferred.
- Exceptional organization and project management skills, as well as a high degree of motivation, enthusiasm, and initiative are required for this position.
- Experience with managing data collection for research projects preferred.
- Experience in creating research study materials for staff and participants preferred.
- Experience in managing websites and social media preferred.
- Registered physical therapist or certified clinical exercise physiologist (CSEP or ACSM) or equivalent is an asset.
- Certified in CPR.
